Portrait Bust:Tester by noctem-tenebris Portrait Bust:Tester by noctem-tenebris
I have been wanting to work on my characters and such as I have not been able to concentrate very well at all lately. Been sketching a lot...but I figured I would be starting to post more of my dragon species from my story. This guy is no one in particular..just a tester too see how much detail I could do in the full render.

2 hour drawing PSCS5

Vision: While little more than a floating head, neck, and shoulders, that's what busts are. That being said, this dragon has a very *majestic* head/neck/shoulders going on here. There is both motion and emotion clearly present, and the ferocity of the beast is tangible.

Originality: Its difficult to be too horribly original when depicting a dragon, because "dragons is dragons is dragons" ... Unless one attempts to break away in a bold and daring fashion, which sometimes seems too contrived to fully enjoy, then one's dragon will look very... dragon-like. Regardless, this drawing is hardly 'cookie-cutter'. It's originality stems almost entirely from the detail work about the face and head. The ornamentation (if the horns and spikes may so be called) adds flavor and individuality, more so from its styling than its presence; that the creature has an expressive visage lends it a semblance of personality.

Technique: What a gloriously patient fellow this artist must be -- or perhaps possessing in an extraordinary affinity for crafting a plethora of scales in minimal time with little effort while retaining a high level of precision... the detail level of this picture is astounding. (For all it's minute size, the dragon's eye maintains a forceful presence with an arresting gaze... the "I see you, you will soon die" look.) The only aspect in this category at which I would level my subjective criticism is the presentation of the large scales about the throat. The distinctly thin, clear, and crisp white lines seem out of place as the defining edges of these scales. Theoretically, the white lines in a white-on-black drawing are representative of lighter areas, or edges/spots which, due to their angle, catch and reflect the light: that doesn't appear to be the case with these defining edges, so it rubs me the wrong way. In comparison to the beast's left shoulder, the large triangular scale nearest its right, and perhaps a smidgen of that surrounding area, almost seems... out of focus.

Impact: I believe I mentioned the creature's arresting gaze and intense "thou art my next victim and/or meal, prepareth thee for thy passing from this world" expression. It serves to enhance the impact of the image upon first sight, and every sight thereafter. The detail of the image keeps the eye busy and interested and allows the mind to fully appreciate the beast depicted on the page (as it were) as if it were a real creature caught in a monochrome still photo.

Overall, this picture was of such quality that it prompted me to write my first critique in all of my time at DA.

Could use color but I give it 5 stars for smoothness and subtle but striking power from the face.

I did make a color version but this was a lighting and shading test to make sure everything looked good ;)

I love this so much! What amazing detail! The only thing that seems a bit off to me is the right horn but I'm bad at perspective so I can't really say what is wrong with it... It just seems off. Everything else is fantastic!
